Since 1991, the “belly button approach” to breast augmentation has been used to improve cosmetic results and reduce recovery time. Dr. Patino is one of the few surgeons who are specially trained in the technique formally known as transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA).

The phrase “belly button approach” describes the procedure that is used for a transumbilical breast augmentation. The endoscopic technique used for the procedure means a shorter surgery time and less bleeding during the procedure, as well as a shorter recovery and a smaller, practically invisible scar. Other benefits of the “belly button approach” are fewer complications during and after surgery and lower risk of losing sensation in your nipples. This simpler approach to surgery results in less damage to the breast tissue, an important consideration for women who may want to breastfeed in the future.

Dr. Patino will be instructing a workshop in May of 2020 using the transumbilical technique that will give you more than just the necessary take home skills. If you’re a doctor interested in attending Dr. Patino’s TUBA workshop, please follow this link to register:

How Much Does Transumbilical Breast Augmentation Surgery Cost in Oakland?

Pricing for a transumbilical breast augmentation will depend on a number of different issues. At your initial consultation, we will review all of your pricing and financing options. For further information, view our patient financing page.

How Is Transumbilical Breast Augmentation Performed?

For your transumbilical breast augmentation, a small incision is made on the inside edge of your navel. A tunnel is then created through the subcutaneous fat that rests above your abdominal muscles, and a pocket is made in your breast area for the implant. The empty implant is connected to a special filling tube and pushed through the tunnel to the pocket before being filled with sterile saline solution. The valve on the implant is designed to seal completely when the fill tube is removed. The incision is closed with only a few internal absorbent sutures, which do not need to be removed and no drains are needed.

Post-Transumbilical Breast Augmentation Recovery

Although the “belly button approach” to breast augmentation requires a significantly reduced recovery time than other techniques, you will still need to rest and follow Dr. Patino’s instructions as you heal. Dr. Patino does not use a drain or endoscope with this procedure. Our patients do not typically experience any bruising as part of their recovery because we use tumescent anesthesia. This allows for a quick recovery time where patients can even expect to shower the very next day following their surgery.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

A traditional breast augmentation involves a series of small incisions being made around the breasts and nipples to introduce the patient's choice of breast implants. During a transumbilical breast augmentation, these implants are delivered through an incision that is made on the belly button. This type of breast augmentation is typically preferred by patients who do not wish to have any cutting or scarring along the breasts during surgery.

The results of your breast augmentation have the potential to last a lifetime. That being said, it is typically recommended you check in with your doctor about 10 years following your breast augmentation procedure. This is to ensure that your breast implants are still in good condition and no issues need to be addressed.

The breast augmentation procedure itself is not very painful as Dr. Patino will use anesthesia throughout the procedure to ensure you remain as comfortable as possible throughout your surgery. Following your breast augmentation, you will likely experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the chest. Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities including work and mild exercise within two weeks of surgery.

While recovery times will vary from patient to patient, we typically recommend patients take about five days off of work. After this time, patients generally feel back up to the task of working provided their job does not require heavy manual labor.
