Since 1991, the “belly button approach” to breast augmentation has been used to improve cosmetic results and reduce recovery time. Dr. Patino is one of the few surgeons who are specially trained in the technique formally known as transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA).
The phrase “belly button approach” describes the procedure that is used for a transumbilical breast augmentation. The endoscopic technique used for the procedure means a shorter surgery time and less bleeding during the procedure, as well as a shorter recovery and a smaller, practically invisible scar. Other benefits of the “belly button approach” are fewer complications during and after surgery and lower risk of losing sensation in your nipples. This simpler approach to surgery results in less damage to the breast tissue, an important consideration for women who may want to breastfeed in the future.
How Is Transumbilical Breast Augmentation Performed?
For your transumbilical breast augmentation, a small incision is made on the inside edge of your navel. A tunnel is then created through the subcutaneous fat that rests above your abdominal muscles, and a pocket is made in your breast area for the implant. The empty implant is connected to a special filling tube and pushed through the tunnel to the pocket before being filled with sterile saline solution. The valve on the implant is designed to seal completely when the fill tube is removed. The incision is closed with sutures, and a drain is placed in your belly button.
Post-Transumbilical Breast Augmentation Recovery
Although the “belly button approach” to breast augmentation requires a significantly reduced recovery time than other techniques, you will still need to rest and follow Dr. Patino’s instructions as you heal. For the first few days, you may experience mild to moderate bruising and swelling. The drain will be covered with gauze that needs to be changed as needed – you should avoid touching the drain while you are changing the gauze. Ice and pain medications can help with the discomfort and swelling. You may be required to wear a special compression garment for the first few days, and you should limit your activities with minimal walking and no bending, lifting, straining, or exercising. You should avoid showering and bathing while the drain is in place.
On the fourth day, the bruising and swelling are decreased, and most patients have the drain removed. You can shower after the drain is removed, but you should avoid bathing for one week after drain removal. You will need to continue limiting your activities until well into your healing period, approximately three to four weeks.
