How Is Liposuction Performed?
Dr. Patino may choose from several liposuction techniques to meet your individual needs. In all of these techniques, a small, stainless steel tube called a cannula will be inserted into your fat deposits through a small incision in your skin. The cannula is attached to a high-powered pump that literally aspirates the fat directly out of your body.
Before you commit to liposuction surgery, Dr. Patino will discuss the potential for additional surgeries with you, to make sure you understand all of your options. For example, if you have excessive skin around the abdominal area, Dr. Patino may recommend a tummy tuck to completely firm and contour the area.
What Can I Expect After Liposuction?
Recovery from liposuction will depend greatly on the area treated and your body’s natural ability to heal.
Within the first two weeks, you may experience the following side effects:
- Mild discomfort around the treated area
- Swelling, bruising, or numbness around the treated area
- Fluid drainage
- General fatigue
Dr. Patino will be able to provide you with prescription pain medication to deal with the discomfort and will check to ensure you are healing properly. During these first few weeks, you can accelerate the healing process by refraining from activities that are physically strenuous.
Swelling and bruising generally subside within one month. Dr. Patino will supply you with pressure garments to be worn underneath your clothing until the swelling has stopped entirely. An additional benefit of these garments is that they help maintain your shape and speed the healing process.
With proper diet and exercise, the results of your liposuction can be permanent, making this brief recovery time inconsequential compared to your renewed sense of self-confidence.

Does lipo permanently remove fat?
Yes, once the fat from your desired area is removed via liposuction, it is never replaced with new fat. That being said, it is still possible to gain weight and have the appearance of new fat in your treated areas following surgery. For this reason, Dr. Patino and his team recommend leading a healthy and active lifestyle to maintain the results of your liposuction procedure.
How much weight can you lose with liposuction?
It's not uncommon to see some patients lose up to 20 or 30 pounds following their liposuction procedures. However, liposuction should not be seen as a weight-loss procedure or weight loss alternative. Dr. Patino and his team recommend leading a healthy and active lifestyle to maintain the results of your liposuction procedure.
How painful is liposuction?
Liposuction itself is not very painful as Dr. Patino will use anesthesia throughout the procedure to ensure you remain as comfortable as possible throughout your surgery. Following your liposuction procedure, you will likely experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness around your treated areas. Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities including work and mild exercise within two weeks of surgery.
Is lipo or a tummy tuck better?
The answer to this question depends on the results you’re looking for. If you’re looking to remove stubborn fat from your midsection but do not care to address loose skin, liposuction is best for you. If you’re looking to address loose skin around your midsection, however, a tummy tuck is your best option. A tummy tuck may be performed in conjunction with liposuction for patients who wish to address both concerns at the same time.
